Description of service/practice development
Throughout 2013, Girlguiding members in the UK were challenged to become Girls in Action and make a difference to the lives of girls and young women in the UK and across the world. Girlguiding joined forces with five UK charities, including AVA, who created projects for Girl Guides to learn about issues that affect the lives of girls and women in the UK and around the world, and empower them to advocate, volunteer and raise awareness to make the world a better place for girls. AVA’s project was called ‘Change the Story’ and aimed to help girls think about safe friendships and relationships, gender stereotyping, keeping safe and identifying services and support options. There were also some exciting opportunities for activism!
Anticipated key learning
The key learning from this project has been on how collaborations between youth organisations and organisations working in the field of violence against women and children can ensure that girls are empowered to act for themselves and others against stereotypes and discrimination.
